Yeah. The WRTF has gotten around to answering us. Sort of. What really gets to me is how they say the same thing, over and over and over again.

Yeah, it's called copying and pasting from another website! :-D

Because without their Poitiers hagiographies to steal from, verbatim, they're class dunces! :-D

Housecarl:

They don't copy and paste, exactly. Because I don't see that much quotation. However, it appears to me that they have done a very narrow range of reading(a little more than WoP, but not enough to have gone into the subject in much depth, nore have they ranged out of some of the more "popular" authors whose work they apparently take out of context. Still, I may try again to engage them on a somewhat wider set of issues than the onese we've been hashing over here, more or less endlessly. There's a lot that could be done in a site like this, if only the people would be willing to open their minds.

I think that if certain elements were neutralized it might be more effective - other than that ..... people just don't have the time to combat drivel ...

Melisende:

I think the only way certain elements could be "neutralized" is (a) just to ignore them and bring up our own topics, and (b) get people to come over here, who know what they're talking about, and encourage them to join the conversation. The "elements" to which you refer, will never shut up with their inane, uninformed blather otherwise. But if more people get in here and do some discussing, maybe they will take their inane, uninformed blather elsewhere.

Three present members here are capable and willing to debate this great topic, but I think we've grown bored to the point that it seems we don't even feel inspired to even bother discussing 1066 anymore on this stale and tired website.

Housecarl and all:

Well, if you wanted to expand the type of topics you were willing to discuss, and expand the period somewhat, there would still be a good deal we could hash over. And I doubt that "certain elements" would know eneough about these things, to come up with an intelligent answer, so they could safely be ignored until more people come on board. Anyone want to take a stab at this?

Housecarl and all:

I'm sort of familiar with the site you gave a link for. That is, I looked it up in the past, and it's obvious that the person has added some material. Furthermore, the site lists perfectly good source material, both primary and secondary. And it's directed at what we on this side of the Pond would call "middle school" kids. It actually does a rather good job of covering the basics. however, my eyebrows practially rose to my hairline, when I discovered by browsing through this site, that the aauthor seems to think Hereward is a "legend"! Since the author lists the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the ASC actually has entries about Hereward and his activities it seems kind of strange that the site would treat him as legendary. I thought much the same thing, until I actually read the entries in the ASC, which is probably ultimately what sparked my interest in Hereward as a character in the first place. He was definitely not legendary, though some of the exploits attributed to him certainly are.

Hereward was no legend. His activities are what concentrate people's minds. He resisted The Norman Revolution and was one of those defeated at the Siege of Ely which the Conqueror personally commanded. The legend is about whether he escaped and 'resisted' further or was punished after the defeat. Another source states he surrendered later to the Conqueror. The Gesta Herewardi Saxonis portrays him as little more than a brigand. Regarding the site referred to: this shows just how much it is necessary to get the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth about the The Norman Revolution 1058-1100.How can this site be taken seriously when it does not recognise that there were indisputably 3 battles in 1066?

Clearly a humour bypass here- that site was for s.c.h.o.o.l.s to demonstrate the imbecility of you David Douglas plagiarists! emoticon

Hereward was a skilled guerilla warfare soldier that held out against the bastard for a year, and escaped a deserved hero.

The puffing fat bastard was a stern-faced murderer from a notoriously dysfunctional family and rebelled against the Papacy's wishes...before being robbed naked on a floor alone, and being burst open! emoticon
