Martin
That would fall into the category of apocryphal emoticon he did check that arrow but the same that assassinated him seems hype.

Re: William the Red

I heard a great story about the Red yesterday which I want to share with the Chatboard because I think it reflects how fundamentally committed he was to one of the central tenets of The Norman Revolution 1066-1100. During his Xmas Court at Gloucester, (the year is unknown)he decided on setting up a debate between Jewish scholars and his most prominent bishops on matters [sign in to see URL] stated also that if the Jewish scholars won he would convert to their [sign in to see URL] is unknown whether the debate happened or if it did who [sign in to see URL] such an open mind could only be the property of someone who was strongly influenced by Cluniacism and the introduction by the Conqueror of the first permanent settlements of Jewish people in Angleland after Senlac.

Bill: Its a great story but the version I know is situated outside Rochester in 1088 during the siege of Odo's [sign in to see URL] Red is reputed to have made the remark to his commanders during a break in hostilities.

Re: William the Red

Martin it is the facts that the Conqueror's elder son Richard died in questionable circumstances in the New Forest(struck by a branch while riding??) and Courtheuse's son Richard was shot through the throat by a "badly aimed"(??)arrow in that forest which must have been uppermost in the Red's [sign in to see URL] Courtheuse's son incident induced the Red to later pursue the bowman responsible who only escaped the justice he deserved by taking holy vows and becoming a monk (??)There is a case here for a "dry-run" for the plotters of the Red's assassination since Tyrell's escape was equally outrageous.

I have always thought that he was fully aware of the risks but the fact that The Norman Revolution was expanding in The Kingdom of the Franks with him leading it, ultimately drove him to join the hunt that day.

We are doing a study of the sieges of Durham and Bristol Castles during the Counter-Revolution in Angleland of [sign in to see URL] we are looking for is extant manuscripts describing the length of time it took the forces loyal to the Red to achieve victory and the part played by Geoffrey of Countances and Robert de [sign in to see URL] addition we need information on how the final defeats compared with the Red's greatest victory at Rochester:were they surrenders from inside or did battles take place outside the walls? This kind of information or other less direct would be much [sign in to see URL].

CT et alia
One needs to be more than a trifle circumspect about it given its pro-Beauclerc bias, however C Warren-Hollister's account in his 'Henry 1' could be of assistance in your endeavours.

All

The following two extracts refer to comments made concerning the Red. The first is about him and the second is by him. What were the historical factors apposite to each?

‘ He pillaged the richer men of England by depriving them of their wealth and lands ‘.

‘Yesterday I hated him with great hatred; today I hate him with still greater hatred, and he can be certain that tomorrow and thereafter I shall hate him continually with ever fiercer and more bitter hatred. I absolutely refuse any longer to regard him as father or archbishop. As for his blessings and prayers, I utterly abominate them and spew them from me’.

Lydia:

By any chance, was he referring to Anselm, the successor of Lanfranc? William "the Red" certainly doesn't seem to have had much respect for churchmen(don't know about "religion" in general).

Lydia,
The first extract is Florence of Worcester's opinion of the [sign in to see URL] sure about the context since it could be a summary of the Red's [sign in to see URL] other is Anselm but the context could be a number of incidents since they clashed regularly down to 1100.
