In addition to Housecarl 1066,in Domesday Book 1086,it is referred to as Pevenesel.The -el normally indicates a diminutive interpretation to similar words.Count Robert de Mortain,William the Conqueror's half brother,owned it and the warders of the castle held stakes in portions of the wider territory.
