The 'Saxon Battle Axe' in Battle Town Museum

Hello all, I am a new member so the first thing I'd like to say is how much I enjoyed the secretsofthenormaninvasion website and how fascinating the evidence is. We were inspired enough to explore some of the Crowhurst locations on a fine Summer's evening last week.

The website does say in several places that no archaeological evidence on senlac has ever been found. But when I paid a visit to Battle museum last week they had a proud display of a Saxon war-axe from the 11th century that had been found within the official English Heritage battleground site.

The axe in question had apprently been only recently confirmed as one designed for war (I imagine there must have been imitial speculation as to whether it was a wood-cutters axe).

One further thing struck me as curious - the axe was apprently found right on the edge of the 'battlefield' at Marley Lane. For those who know Battle this is an area that was surely behind Norman lines (if of course we buy into the traditional account of the Battle emoticon ) This made me think the find is probably equally evidence of the Crowhurst Battlefield, perhaps discarded in haste by defeated Saxon warriors retreating up towards the London Road.

Anyway, I'm not an expert historian, but I do have a keen interest and would be interested in people's thoughts on this matter.

A saxon battle axe behind the Norman lines is proof that the Saxons were there not proof of the battle site.

Marley Lane, The axe heads location would have been behind Saxon lines on Senlac ridge, approx 200 meters from the extreme left flank of the Englisc, I spoke to the curator of the town museum at some length last time I was there and he also believed arrow heads had been found in the area, but that they were in private collections and had never been handed into the authorities.
