Re: Tassels
Lydia, holy relics? The Conqueror was determined to remind the enemy of the oath Godwineson swore by any means necessary and it would not be surprising to see additional insignia to those he was stated to have worn around his neck. The only other description that i've seen is that unlike what appears in The Bayeux Tapestry the helmet was very different from those worn by anybody else in his revolutionary army. This seems reasonable if you see him as the central leader that inspires and who must therefore be clearly identified on the battlefield at all times. It might also relate to the fact that his crown was altered post-1066 to represent the new Normandy-Angleland relationship.

Sorry for not replying earlier.
This is a quiz and I am afraid you will have to establish more detail.

Re: Tassels
All
I must confess to being more than a trifle disappointed
To locate the answer one need do no more than read a certain contribution on the Board.
The tassels the Conqueror wore at the rear of his helmet on Senlac represented the horns of The Old and New Testaments and symbolised his just,Cluniacist cause and its drive to put the very fear of God in the enemy.
